2012 Volvo XC70

The 2012 Volvo XC70 has undergone a handful of technological changes along with a few minor stylistic upgrades. Searching for refinement in an already pleasing line, the added enhancements focus mostly on increasing safety and making life easier on drivers of this mid-sized crossover vehicle.

The overall look of the XC70 wagon has changed little. Exterior enhancements include modified wheel designs, available in 16-, 17- and 18-inch alloy styles, and redesigned headlights. A new paint color, Twilight Bronze, is also available. Heated exterior mirrors with integrated turn signals and aluminum roof rails are standard, while bi-xenon headlights with swiveling lenses, rain-sensing wipers and a power liftgate are optional on most models.

The 2012 XC70 comes with a 3.2-liter, V6 engine offering 240 horsepower and 236 lb/ft of torque. The T6 engine, a turbocharged, 3.0-liter V6 with 300 horsepower and 325 lb/ft of torque, is also available, and it comes with all-wheel drive. Each model and trim has a 6-speed, automatic transmission. Fuel mileage averages from 17-18 mpg in the city to 22-25 mpg on the highway, depending on the drivetrain and engine model.

Anti-lock brakes with hydraulic assist, stability and traction control, and front-seat, side-impact and side-curtain airbags are all standard. An exciting addition is the standardization of the well-received City Safety feature, which senses the proximity of other cars in front of the vehicle. When traveling at speeds under 9 mph, the feature applies the brakes to avoid a collision if the driver fails to do so. It also brakes at speeds up to 19 mph, although doing so may only reduce the severity of an impact.

Additional safety upgrades are included in the XC70 technology package. The Pedestrian Safety feature monitors forward spaces for pedestrians. The system first sounds a warning inside the car, and if the driver fails to act, it will apply the brakes. There is a lane-departure warning feature as well to prevent drifting. The final safety enhancement is Adaptive Cruise Control, which slows the car automatically as other cars slow, stopping altogether if needed. It then accelerates again as traffic flows.

The biggest interior enhancement in 2012 is the Sensus infotainment system. Users can control audio, video and climate features via the touchscreen interface or with controls on the steering wheel. It also handles various other systems, such as those featured in the technology package,

Bluetooth and navigation. Other additions include a new three-spoke steering wheel and a new upholstery highlight color.

The 2012 XC70 adds three new trim packages with Premier, Premier Plus and Platinum. The Premier standard features include leather seats, walnut trim, power moonroof, tinted rear windows and a power passenger seat in front. The Plus model adds parking sensors in front and back, keyless start and the power liftgate. At the Premium level, features include an upgraded stereo, a navigation system and a backup camera.

The 2012 Volvo XC70 strives for "a feeling of relaxed control" that enhances the driving experience while keeping everybody safe.
